This Weeks Question:
What is your biggest pet peeve when it comes to books? Maybe you don’t like love triangles or thin plots? Tell us about it!
I do hate thin plots, but I hat two pet peeves that really get to me in two different genres:
In PNR I can’t stand an Alpha male that goes to far to try and prove he has all the power! I like there to be a balance in my main characters. There have been many PNR books I didn’t finish because I couldn’t stand the male lead.
In YA I can’t stand the bitchy best friend…they drive me crazy. I can remember being a little whiney when I was that age but come on. Now I don’t mind if there is some sort of happening and they start to see the error of their ways. But, if they stay completely non-supportive, drop the not-good-enough-friend. In real life who stays friends with that?
Happy Hopping,
Just started following! haha love your comment about the bitchy best friend.

Hopping through. I don't like the jerky bf either. I also don't like the hyper boy-crazy bf. Too stereotypical.

The bitchy best friend doesn't bother me so much; probably because it mimic's my life. (my "BFF" in high school was totally the bitchy best friend! And she still pops up in my life every so often to try and reprise her role...)

Great answers! I agree with both, especially the best friend thing. Some characters make me so mad! How much is a person supposed to take and keep coming back for more?
ReplyDeleteHappy Friday!
The bitchy best friend is one of my pet hates too. I love contemporary realistic, but it seems like far too many protagonists have BFFs who actually HATE their guts and just aren't saying so or something :/

Oh man. I love a well written Alpha, but not a stupid Alpha that says me male, you female and takes her. Very few people can write a good Alpha.
ReplyDeleteI don;t care for the Alpha male that much either. Although at times I do find them endearing, it goes both ways.

I agree on both accounts! They can really turn a book sour fast.

Great answers! If you have a bad best friend, and they don't really help the main character that much throughout the story, just don't even mention the character. You should just write about a better friend.

See, for me, it's a little bit different. I actually like the bitchy best friend, because sometimes they make the more interesting character's. Like, there's something going on with them that they are telling their bff who's "oh so amazing and likeable" or they're just that snarktastically amazing character that's hard not to love, who possesses the flaws and the likability that the bff doesn't.

Hi! I'm a new follower and I agree with you on the bitchy best friend. It makes me wonder why the main character is even friends with that person! Please check out my blog at http://www.rachelrmrblog.blogspot.com
