True love can last an eternity . . . but immortality comes at a price. On the midnight shift at a hospital in rural St. Andrew, Maine, Dr. Luke Findley is expecting a quiet evening. Until a mysterious woman arrives in his ER, escorted by police—Lanore McIlvrae is a murder suspect—and Luke is inexplicably drawn to her. As Lanny tells him her story, an impassioned account of love and betrayal that transcends time and mortality, she changes his life forever. . . . At the turn of the nineteenth century, when St. Andrew was a Puritan settlement, Lanny was consumed as a child by her love for the son of the town’s founder, and she will do anything to be with him forever. But the price she pays is steep—an immortal bond that chains her to a terrible fate for eternity.

Review

Ever since I was a little girl I have loved to listen to people tell their stories. I can remember being young and my mom taking me on a trip to one of her friend’s house, once my mom got someone talking that would be it for me. Instead of going out and playing like other kids I would sit and listen to everything that was said. I remember loving the feeling of being in the life of the person telling about their past because they were sharing it with me. That is what The Taker was like for me. Alma Katsu did this amazing job of having Lanny, the main character, tell her own story. I can’t remember the last time I was completely sucked into a story like I was while reading The Taker.

The characters in The Taker had me cheering, cursing, and at times just drove me crazy. Why? Because Katsu writes such flawed/real characters. Lanny is the perfect example of a woman who will do anything for love even when she knows it won’t be returned in the same way. Watching… err, reading each character struggle is what had me turning the pages faster and faster. I had to know how this tale of friendship and love unfolded to the present day.

I didn’t get the answers to all my questions about some of the immortal aspects of the story that I wanted, but in all honesty for me the mystery added to this story. I do know that further in the series more of those questions will be answered. so if you are one of those people who can’t stand to have anything hanging in your mind you may want to wait a bit and read the trilogy as a whole. I for one am in love with this trilogy and can’t wait to get my hands on the second book!!!

Happy reading,

  1. I am so glad to hear you enjoyed this one! I bought it on a whim as a bargain book last week even though I couldn't really imagine how exactly it would play out. Awesome that you were so pulled in by the story and characters, now I really want to read my own copy :)
The cover of yours is way prettier than that of mine, by the way o.O
