Throwback Thursday: The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket

I don’t know if any other book bloggers do Throwback Thursday, so if you have seen others do this let me know. I am big on rereading books I have loved so I think I will start featuring some old favorites!

My pick this week:

The Bad Beginning (A Series of Unfortunate Events, #1)

Dear Reader,

I'm sorry to say that the book you are holding in your hands is extremely unpleasant. It tells an unhappy tale about three very unlucky children. Even though they are charming and clever, the Baudelaire siblings lead lives filled with misery and woe. From the very first page of this book when the children are at the beach and receive terrible news, continuing on through the entire story, disaster lurks at their heels. One might say they are magnets for misfortune.

In this short book alone, the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune, and cold porridge for breakfast.

It is my sad duty to write down these unpleasant tales, but there is nothing stopping you from putting this book down at once and reading something happy, if you prefer that sort of thing.

With all due respect,
Lemony Snicket

Why I picked The Bad Beginning

This week’s Throwback Thursday recommendation actually comes from my younger sister, Sarah. We were in a library together recently and saw this series on the shelf and she got all excited asking me if I had started reading this series to my girls. When I told Sarah I just started reading the first book with my girls, and that they where enjoying it she was very happy. I can still remember Sarah collecting this series years ago and going through them like they were her favorite candy. Anyone can enjoy these books whether it is the first time through or reading it again.

Have you read this series, or always wanted to?
Happy reading,
Signature

  1. I have not read this series. I should buy it for the kiddos and then I can read it as well at the same time!

    1. That is how I go through so many children's books that I have wanted to read through the years. If there is a movie version of the book we watch that after and then talk about what is different between the two.

  4. I read the first 4 books or so in this series, and thought it was pretty fun. :) I like the author's use of language and sense of humor. Nice to see it featured here!
