Nara Collins is an average sixteen-year-old, with one exception: every night she dreams the events of the following day. Due to an incident in her past, Nara avoids using her special gift to change fate…until she dreams a future she can’t ignore.

After Nara prevents a bombing at Blue Ridge High, her ability to see the future starts to fade, while people at school are suddenly being injured at an unusually high rate.

Grappling with her diminishing powers and the need to prevent another disaster, Nara meets Ethan Harris, a mysterious loner who seems to understand her better than anyone. Ethan and Nara forge an irresistible connection, but as their relationship heats up, so do her questions about his dark past. [Goodreads]

Review

I got this as a free download from Amazon.  And I read it over the course of a few days, sneaking little bits here and there, whenever I could.  I was engrossed in the story, yet surprisingly detached from it.  I’ve spent the past couple days trying to remember what the book was about.  It was interesting, yet strangely forgettable.  Some of my favorite bloggers raved over this book.  Maybe it just wasn’t for me.

I was very curious about this book from the cover.  Then read the description and thought I’d love this book.  Guess what?  The cover actually has relevance to the story line!  What?  It actually does?  Yay!  I get annoyed when a book has a beautiful cover, that has nothing to do with the story.  So major props to the person who designed the cover.

The story itself was well written, with mostly-believable characters.  The connection/attraction/longing between Nara and Ethan was a little much for me.  It seemed to add a  “been there done that” quality to the book.  I did like that they both had each other’s best interests at heart in their decision making.  Things got hot and steamy between them, and I’m glad that they didn’t go all the way.  It was very endearing.  Aunt Sage seemed a little too cliché, the
“cool new-age artsy aunt.”  I didn’t really get why she was such a big part of the book.

I felt like it took way too long for Nara and Ethan to figure out what was going on.  I kinda had a clue before they did.  And even though they were dealing with things, it just seemed like they should have caught on sooner.  And her reluctance to call her dad even after she found out about his own things was irritating.

Overall, The Brightest Kind of Darkness was fun, I just didn’t connect with it the way I felt like I should have.  I realize this is a series, and I know y’all are going to roll your eyes, but there was no closure for me.  I don’t feel like I have a good grasp on what happened or on what is yet to come.

  1. I loved this one. I've read it and Lucid, both twice.

The first time I read BKoD, it was all YAY YAY YAY!! The second time I saw a couple of the same things you did, but I didn't like it any less than I did the first time. I couldn't figure out the ravens though. Maybe I'm missing something obvious?

With Lucid, there are more characters and there is a littler more mystery to it. I liked it much better the second time I read it - but the second time I read it, I read it much slower and really took in all of the information, because there is a LOT of new information. I think the series is really interesting and going in a neat direction. It's different than other paranormal-ish stuff out there, and I like that. But still, the birds are there and I still can't figure them out, although there is a little more explanation for them in the second book.

I am absolutely going to keep up with this series. I *think* I read somewhere that this is supposed to be a quartet, not counting the novellas, but I can't remember where I read that so don't quote me on it. I can't tell from your thoughts if you're gonna continue with it or not, but I think you'll find if you decide to read Lucid that things kind of amp up a little bit and there is some mystery involved. (The relationship between Nora and Ethan is very interesting in the second book.)

I agree that these are really good covers.

  2. I have this one on my kindle too but I haven't read it yet. I'm in no big hurry but I'll keep your thoughts in mind when I get to it. I really don't like when books aren't memorable.
