Interview and Giveaway with Author Elizabeth Hunter

Elizabeth Hunter author of A Hidden Fire and This Same Earth.
Elizabeth Hunter

I am so excited to have Elizabeth here today. I am in love with her Elemental Mysteries series! I honestly don’t know how you could not enjoy these books. Now before I turn into a total fangirl, onto the interview:

Can you tell us how you got started in your writing career?

I’d been a technical writer for years penning such compelling works as The Employee Manual, An OSHA-Compliant Safety Program, and A Proposal to Save You Money. (Strangely, no one will admit to reading any of those. It’s also possible that no one actually did.) I started writing for fun a little over a year ago! I started writing in fan fiction, actually, which was a blast and a great introduction to creative writing. Very quickly, I started getting ideas for my own characters and my own universe. I just fell in love with the whole creative writing process, and I still love it.

What is the Elemental Mysteries series about?

The Elemental Mysteries revolve around two central characters, Giovanni Vecchio, a five-hundred year old book dealer (who happens to be a vampire) and Beatrice De Novo, a librarian he meets doing research. The mystery comes from a secret in Gio’s past, but it’s something that also ties in with Beatrice’s personal history, though she doesn’t know it at first. It’s a romance, but it’s also very much a mystery and hopefully, has a lot of suspense, as well. There’s also a lot of history in it, but it’s not historical fiction.

How did you come up with the idea for this series?

Story always starts with character for me. I always think of the character or characters first, then the plot grows from them. I was trying to imagine one day what I would actually do with myself if I had an eternity to live. I’m a bookworm, so I’d read, of course! From that idea came the idea of an immortal character whose life revolved around books. Giovanni Vecchio was born in my imagination, then I started sketching out his character and his background. The mystery became twisted with his past, and involves a real life mystery about a 15th century philosopher, but you’ll have to read A Hidden Fire to find out who!

Who is your favorite character in the EMS and why?

I have to pick one? I can’t! I love Gio and B’s back and forth dialogue. I love Carwyn. A lot of the humor in the book is from him (and his humor is very much like my husband’s) so he’s really fun and easy to write. I love, love, love Tenzin, who is a very difficult character for me to write. She’s a challenge, but a really fascinating one. I love them all in very different ways, but if I had to pick one, it would be Gio, because he was the first. (I know, playing favorites!)

What is your favorite genre of book to read?

I love paranormal and fantasy! I have from the time I was a little girl, and my parents read me The Hobbit. In fact, my dad had me convinced for years that Welsh people were descended from hobbits. I thought it was great! (In my defense, I was six, and my dad does have very hairy toes, and I have very curly hair.) I love the magic of it all. I grew to love sci-fi and historical fiction later on, and then mysteries! All kinds of mysteries. I love mystery.

I love your writing style! Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

Thank you! That's really flattering. It’s such a huge question, but I think there are three things I’ve learned for myself:

Read. You have to read a lot. A nationally-published journalist told me once if I wanted to be a writer, not to study writing! He said to study literature and learn from the great writers of the past and present. I think there’s a lot of wisdom in that. (Though I know there’s a lot of skill that can be learned from a great writing teacher, too.) But read!

Love. You have to fall in love with your characters and your story. If you’re going to write a novel, you’ll be spending a lot of time with them! Be passionate, or it becomes a chore.

Learn. Find a group of fellow writers who will be honest with you in a supportive and constructive way. Volunteer to edit their work and learn from that! A lot of writing is just practice, but you have to be willing to learn, and you must want to grow.

What will we be seeing from you in the future?

The original Elemental Mysteries Series will be four books. That’s certain. They’re plotted, planned, and I’m working on the rough draft for Book Four right now. Is there more to write in this universe? I think there will definitely be at least one stand-alone novel for a very popular character (You Carwyn fans are loud!) and then I’m fairly certain that I’ll be developing another series that will be “in universe,” but very different, featuring two other Elementals characters. (Don’t even ask, I’m not telling yet!) They’ll all be adult paranormal. I don’t have any plans to dive into YA at the moment. As for the future, there’s always different things brewing in my brain!

Thank you so much Elizabeth for taking the time out of your busy schedule to answer my questions. Oh, and just a thought: super cute southern girls named Rebecca make great Carwyn love interest…just saying ;)

Review

I love this series!

I have not been this excited about a series in a long time! The first thing I did when I finished A Hidden Fire (book one) was email Elizabeth Hunter to ask her when book two would be out. Guess what I did as soon as I could after finishing up This Same Earth? That’s right, I tweeted Ms. Hunter to find out if book three is finished or not. The answer I got was yes, but it does not come out till March of 2012. But The characters that Elizabeth Hunter writes are so worth that wait.

This Same Earth was a very different book than A Hidden Fire. This Same Earth dealt so much more with relationships than the first book, and I’m not just talking about Gio and B’s relationship (although that was played out) it was everyone and how each person, or vampire relates to the other. This did slow the book down at times but I felt like I had a better understanding of how the vampire world in this series related to one another as family, as lovers, and as husband and wife and it was nice to learn that through B’s eyes.

B or Beatrice (she goes by both) was stronger but more emotional in This Same Earth. She has spent years physically away from Gio and when he comes back into her life she understandably doesn’t know if she can trust him again. I really felt for B as she was pulled back into Gio’s world when she finally opens up to why Gio leaving hurt so much it almost brings you to tears. Gio drove me a little crazy in This same Earth. I think I just don’t like the fact that his character has such a hard time being wrong or not in control…yes, he saw the error of his ways eventually but it got to me. I did like reading all the scenes with he and Ben. Ben is a twelve year old boy Gio adopted a year ago, seeing them together showed a different side to Gio, and it helped make up for less Casper time.

All of the old cast is back along with some new faces. We get to meet B’s I-don’t-know-how-many-greats grandpa. He is a very strong and powerful water vampire and quite the character. I hope to see more of him in the future. And of course my favorite vamp was back, Carwyn!  I will not give any real spoilers but I got to see a new side of the happy go lucky priest. (Who just so happens to be my major vampire crush at the moment)

The world that Elizabeth Hunter started in A Hidden Fire was enriched in This Same Earth and I am impatiently waiting to see how she continues to build the Elemental Mysteries world in The Force of Wind when it comes out in 2012. Really Elizabeth Hunter, if you need anyone *cough* to read *smiles very sweetly* The Force of Wind extremely early *wink, wink* I’m sure I could try to fit it in my scheduleWinking smile  Yes people, this series is so good I have no shame. Oh, and there is is a sneak peek of The Force of Wind at the end of This Same Earth, and it is so good.

Happy Reading,

This Weeks Question:

What is your biggest pet peeve when it comes to books? Maybe you don’t like love triangles or thin plots? Tell us about it!

I do hate thin plots, but I hat two pet peeves that really get to me in two different genres:

In PNR I can’t stand an Alpha male that goes to far to try and prove he has all the power! I like there to be a balance in my main characters. There have been many PNR books I didn’t finish because I couldn’t stand the male lead.

In YA I can’t stand the bitchy best friend…they drive me crazy. I can remember being a little whiney when I was that age but come on. Now I don’t mind if there is some sort of happening and they start to see the error of their ways. But, if they stay completely non-supportive, drop the not-good-enough-friend. In real life who stays friends with that?

Review

I loved this book so much I don’t know where to start. Yes, I have said I loved a book before but you don’t understand I want to write the Harbinger sonnets, sing it love songs, and woo it until, Harbinger loves me back. Take another look at that cover, amazing right? You know how I am about covers! Harbinger totally lives up to its cover.

Once I started reading Harbinger I became so enveloped in the world that Ms. Wilson Etienne created. (Like to the point of being late for picking my kid up from school!) Holbrook Academy is a scary place! I don’t think I would have made it there. I could feel a treacherous doom building in the atmosphere from the start, keeping my intrigue peeked until the last page was tuned.

Faye is dropped off at Holbrook by her father to be rehabilitated, so that she can act like everyone else in society. At least that is the reason everyone has given her. I think anyone who has ever felt alone will enjoy Faye’s character. Faye is smart and kind, but she has this great fear that if she were to open up and show who she really is to anyone she will be left alone. Faye stole my heart while I was reading Harbinger, all the pain she had to feel was completely palpable to me.

The person that Faye wants to trust the most and is also the most confused by is Kel. Faye isn't the only one he had confused—Kel had me guessing too, whether he was good or evil, until toward the end of the book. Kel drove me crazy in the best kind of way because I wanted to love his character but I couldn’t decide if it was safe to. I so enjoyed all the things that Faye would discover about herself through her interactions with Kel.

I think what I liked best about Harbinger is that there were no skimable parts, every word had meaning. I was so wrapped-up in the suspense, I hung on to every word fearful I would miss something. I did not see the ending coming it was very much a surprise. That almost never happens to me!
