Review: Artemis Fowl (Artemis Fowl #1)

Artemis Fowl (Artemis Fowl, #1)

Description

Artemis Fowl should never have kidnapped the fairy. Instead of a pleasant little bedtime story creature, this sprite turned out to be an unholy terror. All of Artemis's genius for crime was challenged by this irritating hazel-eyed little elf. It requires the entire novel to get things back under control. (Goodreads)

Review

It’s the 10th Anniversary release of Artemis Fowl and the book shows it’s age, but just a little. The technology referenced throughout the book, at least that which is actually manufactured is a little outdated, but the story, wow, it captivated me from the introduction through the epilogue.

I found myself approaching this book with a comparison to the Percy Jackson series in the back of my mind. And boy was I wrong to do that. In no way do they compare to each other. They each hold their own.

One thing I found incredibly refreshing about Artemis Fowl, is that his a villain, a 12 year-old genius of a villain. He remains true to who he is, while still caring for his family and friends/servants Butler and Juliet. I enjoyed Colfer’s take on faeries and other otherworld characters.

This is a fantastic book and can’t wait to read more!

Then my sister goes missing and I have to find her and solve the mystery before Lily and her unborn child are harmed.

Normally I would have assistance, but my right hand, a hunky angel I’ ve nicknamed Casper, has business of his own to take care of—business that might take him out of my life forever. The stakes are too high for me to lose, but I’ m not sure I can do it alone…  (Goodreads)

Review

In South of Salem paranormal investigator Allegra Fairweather is hard at work to solve another mystery, but It’s so much harder when the clients are your family.

South of Salem was a very fast paced read, and I enjoyed the story line. But I found myself having to go back and reread paragraphs due to the way one scene would (not flow) go into the next. The only other complaint I had was Allegra herself. Allegra’s jealousy over her sister was so childish. It was mentioned so many times that it made me annoyed with Allegra, and question her character.

What I absolutely loved was the character development of the villain, Demelza. Demelza was given a rich back story, with an identical twin and unrequited love. By the end of the book you were cheering on all efforts in killing her, and the evil schemes set forth to destroy Allegra’s family.

Overall I enjoyed this book, and will read the next one.
Happy Reading,
Rebecca

The Hunger Games Cast From Book To Movie

The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1)

I don’t know about the rest of you, but Kelly and I are supper excited about The Hunger Games being made into a movie! Especially since the area in North Carolina were they are filming is only an hour and a half away from us. We both loved this first book and would like a gimps at District 12. We have heard security is tight so time will tell if we get our wish. In this weeks Vlog we discus what we think about who has been cast in the upcoming roles for the movie.

So what did you think? Did you have someone different in mind as you were reading the book, or are you happy with who they have cast? Leave us some comment love. Smile

Happy Reading,

Review

Even though it is the second in the series, you don't have to read the first book, Tithe to enjoy or understand  Valiant.  I connected with Val because she is strong through out the book. She really sees who people really are, with the exception of her mother and ex-boyfriend, and does not take anything at face value. Even, when she is strung out on Never, she knows what she is doing is wrong and is going to ultimately hurt her self and others. I don't think Lolly ever saw that, she always thought she was in control. I think Val realized she wasn't in control, but just didn't know how to stop, until the end of the book; where she did redeem herself.

The love story is awesome-chick who shaved her head and is living in a subway meets a wonderful, albeit tortured soul, who is an ogre. LOVED IT!

I suggest the whole series, but if you were to read only one of the books, read this one!

Happy Reading,

Early Review: Dean Koontz' Frankenstein: Prodigal Son Volume 2 SC by Dean Koontz

Dean Koontz' Frankenstein: Prodigal Son Volume 2 SC

Description

The Barnes & Noble Review
Dean Koontz's Frankenstein -- the author's first literary series -- is a nightmare-inspiring, modern-day retelling of Mary Shelley's 1818 horror classic. Coauthored with Kevin J. Anderson, the first installment in this four-volume saga pits a reanimated giant and two tenacious police detectives against the demented scientist who created him.

It's no surprise that Deucalion, at almost seven feet tall and with half his face a mangled ruin, spent time as a European carnie sideshow attraction nicknamed the Monster. After enjoying several peaceful years at a monastery in Tibet, the introspective and enigmatic giant receives dire news: The man who created him centuries earlier, Victor Frankenstein, is inexplicably alive and living in New Orleans under the name of Victor Helios, a wealthy business owner and philanthropist. When Deucalion vows to leave his Tibetan sanctuary and destroy the man who created him, he soon realizes the critical magnitude of his mission -- Helios is in the process is secretly creating a new race of posthumans to take over the world!

As is par for the course in many fiction sagas, readers should be prepared for a cliff-hanger of monumental proportions at the conclusion of Prodigal Son. Koontz and Anderson, however, masterfully set the table for a virtual feast of hideous twists and turns, nightmarish monstrosities, and nonstop action in upcoming installments. Dean Koontz's Frankenstein, in which a man transforms himself into a monster and a monster learns what it's like to be human, is an absolutely brilliant rendition of the Shelley classic -- a horror tour de force. Review

I'm not normally one to go for graphic novels, but I saw this one posted on Net Galley and it caught my attention.  This upcoming release is the second installment in Koontz' Frankenstein series, which I didn't realize at first.  Even though I haven't read the rest of the series, I was instantly drawn (no pun intended) into the story.  It read like a great novel and had the illustrations that add to the story.

Having been my first exposure to graphic novels, I didn't know exactly what to expect.  I really enjoyed the experience!  And more than that, I am looking forward to future installments in the series (and to maybe reading the previous novels).

Review

I fell in love with Shannon Parker’s character in Divine by Mistake. So I was more than a little excited to read Divine by Choice. Unfortunately this second in the series didn’t come close to the greatness of the first.

Shannon has finally gotten the hang of living in Partholon, when she is pulled back into her own Oklahoma by her mirror image Rhiannon. Who has been stirring up all kind of trouble for Shannon’s family and ClanFintan’s mirror image Clint. With Clints help she will have to learn how to defeat Rhiannon, and the evil she has awakened, and figure out how to get back home.

***SPOILER  ALERT***

This book really through me for a loop. The Shannon from the first book would not have made the major decision to have sex with Clint. In the first book Shannon would snark about  Rhiannon’s loose behavior, and how that was not for her. I know Clint is ClanFintan’s mirror image, but I thought she was a stronger character than that, and so is Clint for that matter He knows she is married.

By the end of the book I was Feeling sorry for everyone. Even Rhiannon character, after her back story was given how could I not. I like my bad guys to be….well bad guys, I don’t want to feel sorry for them. In the end was this a page turner? Yes. Will I be reading it again? No. It left me depressed, and I don’t know about reading the next in the series now.

What We Want In A Book

Hi everyone, as Kelly and I are trying to get our blogging schedule down for Bending The Spine we have thought from the beginning that we would like to do vlog post as well as the regular blogs. This is our first vlog, and we had a lot of fun making it. We are thinking at this point that Saturday's will be vlog days. These could be with one, or both of us in them, and the subject will always be book related. Hope you enjoy.

So I want to know the answer to question 4. What book do you covet most? I had two answers Kiss of Snow and Magic Slays. Kelly wants Red Glove and Clockwork Prince. What books do you want most?

These were both quick stories, for when you have that extra time but, not quite long enough to start a good book. Holiday Hell House was only like 30 pages, and Moon Thrall was around 70. two completely different stories but I enjoyed them both.

Review: Eutopia: A Novel of Terrible Optimism by David Nickle

Eutopia: A Novel of Terrible Optimism

Description

The year is 1911. In Cold Spring Harbour, New York, the newly formed Eugenics Records Office is sending its agents to catalogue the infirm, the insane, and the criminal - with an eye to a cull, for the betterment of all. Near Cracked Wheel, Montana, a terrible illness leaves Jason Thistledown an orphan, stranded in his dead mother's cabin until the spring thaw shows him the true meaning of devastation - and the barest thread of hope. At the edge of the utopian mill town of Eliada, Idaho, Doctor Andrew Waggoner faces a Klansman's noose and glimpses wonder in the twisting face of the patient known only as Mister Juke. And deep in a mountain lake overlooking that town, something stirs, and thinks, in its way: Things are looking up.
Eutopia follows Jason and Andrew as together and alone, they delve into the secrets of Eliada - industrialist Garrison Harper's attempt to incubate a perfect community on the edge of the dark woods and mountains of northern Idaho. What they find reveals the true, terrible cost of perfection - the cruelty of the surgeon's knife - the folly of the cull - and a monstrous pact with beings that use perfection as a weapon, and faith as a trap.

Review

I was so excited to read this book. The plot was involved and interesting, overall the book was really well written. The main characters Dr. Waggoner and Jason Thistledown were easy to like and you pulled for them through out the book. I also really enjoyed nurse Annie, some of the Tavishes and Sam Greene, there were times that I was unsure of their motives, but the author played out their stories well. I loved Sam Greene's ending and thought that it was very fitting. However, I didn't really like the book overall, the characters I mentioned were my favorites, but this story involved so many characters, many of them with horrible ulterior motives, that it was hard to care about them all. The main story, about the Jinks, didn't get started until about halfway through the book. I guess that was my main problem, too much back story that, depending on the type of reader you are, may or may not have added to the story. It just seemed to slow everything down for me, until the very climatic ending. I did feel that the ending of the book was a bit of a let down after everything that just happened. I wanted more than just survival, I wanted to know what happened after that initial part downstream. There is some language and sex. Plenty of violence. The word "nigger" is used a lot in referring to  Dr. Waggoner. I understand he is a black character and was trying to overcome very prejudiced people, but I would have understood that without the term being used at all. I maybe more sensitive to it being from the South, but I didn't think it added anything to the story and it may turn some people off from finishing the book.   Overall I give it two moons. It just wasn't for me, but it was an interesting story.

Happy Reading,
Kelly

Review

This was my first P. C. Cast experience, and I loved it. In Devine by Mistake P. C. Cast creates a rich and wondrous world that you want to step into and never leave, and in a way that is what Shannon Parker does.

Shannon Parker is a 35 year old teacher, who had a normal life and liked it as it was. (Not your normal heroin.) She was going home from an estate sale when she was sucked into the world of Partholon. Shannon is amazing! She handles everything with a side of snark, and sarcasm. (just as any girl should) Being thrown into her new role as  High Priestess of Epona Shannon does the best she can, Even when faced with the fact that she will be marrying a centaur.

Clanfinton, is High Shaman of the centaurs. For generations every High Shaman, and High Priestess have joined as husband and wife. I absolutely loved Clanfinton’s character, not to mention the fact that he was steaming HOT!! I know what your thinking half man/ half horse, how is this going to work out? Well Clanfinton can shift into human form but only for a certain activity (wink).

Once I started this one I couldn’t put it down. The love story between Shannon and Canfinton was wonderful. The love story between them is a simple one. But it needs to be that way due to all the other action that is going on. I don’t want to give to much away, but Partholon is under threats from an enemy, and it will take the entire kingdom to defeat it. I have so enjoyed this book and will be revisiting the world of Partholon again and again.

Happy Reading,
Rebecca

Reading by Cassandra Clare:

Review

I could not wait for this book to come out. I actually bought my husband City of Bones, the 1st book in the Mortal Instruments series, for Christmas and ended up reading it, LOVED it. I flew through City of Ashes and City of Glass, which completed the trilogy and then found out she was going to write THREE MORE BOOKS about the Shadowhunters!!!! So as I waited for City of Angels I read the prequel to the Mortal Instruments series, Clockwork Angel, which is the 1st book in the Infernal Devices series. All that leads up to...a really good book.

The Mortal War is over, Clary's mom is planning her wedding to Luke, about time. Simon's love life is getting complicated because he's dating Maia and Isabelle and they don't know about each other! Two females that I would not want on my bad side. Alec is off in Europe with Magnus. Clary and Jace are being complicated and angsty.

Jace and Clary's relationship was my least favorite part of this book. I'm tired of Jace feeling guilty and complex and all of the never ending reason's they shouldn't be together.

I thought Simon's character was really fleshed out, as he dealt with being a Daylighter/Vampire and the struggles and power that goes with it. I wondered how long he would be able to pretend that he was normal, especially living at home with his mother and sister, so I thought sharing the apartment with Jordan was a great idea.

I loved the exchange between Magnus and Camille about the characters in Clockwork Angel and the continued depth of Alec and Magnus's relationship as Alec realized that he would eventually die and Mangus would continue without him.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I am interested to see what the Seelie Queen's Bell is all about and how Camille is going to be involved in the rest of the series. Sebastien's adoptive mother is going to be a problem, not sure how they are going to solve that.

Check out the TMI Postcards from Magnus and Alec on Cassandra's Goodreads page, so funny. I also thought Jace's letter to Clary from the City of Glass was a nice touch.

I enjoyed this book, but not as much as the first three or Clockwork Angel. So I am going to give it three moons, if Clary and Jace's relationship had gone in a different direction it would have been a better book. The saving grace of this series is the great supporting characters that are more interesting than Jace and Clary at this point.

****************************SPOILER ALERT*****************************

So...Jordan, Simon's band's new lead singer is....  Maia's ex-boyfriend that Turned her and he has good reasons for not contacting her. So glad the Maia/Isabelle/Simon love triangle did not last long.

I am so happy that Isabelle finally figured out that she really cares for Simon and it's not just being rebellious against her parents.

Lilith seems like a more formidable foe than Valentine was, not sure how you get rid of the mother of demons and her new wannabe son, Sebastien/Jonathan.

Jace is possessed by Lilith, really. This had better be a super awesome happy ending. REALLY.

Happy Reading,
Kelly
