Review: White Cat (Curse Workers #1)

White Cat (Curse Workers, #1)

Description

Cassel comes from a family of curse workers — people who have the power to change your emotions, your memories, your luck, by the slightest touch of their hands. And since curse work is illegal, they're all mobsters, or con artists. Except for Cassel. He hasn't got the magic touch, so he's an outsider, the straight kid in a crooked family. You just have to ignore one small detail — he killed his best friend, Lila, three years ago.
Ever since, Cassel has carefully built up a façade of normalcy, blending into the crowd. But his façade starts crumbling when he starts sleepwalking, propelled into the night by terrifying dreams about a white cat that wants to tell him something. He's noticing other disturbing things, too, including the strange behavior of his two brothers. They are keeping secrets from him, caught up in a mysterious plot. As Cassel begins to suspect he's part of a huge con game, he also wonders what really happened to Lila. Could she still be alive? To find that out, Cassel will have to out-con the conmen.
Holly Black has created a gripping tale of mobsters and dark magic where a single touch can bring love — or death — and your dreams might be more real than your memories.

Review

I really enjoyed the build up in this book, so many times a book will give away too much too soon, but not this one. The characters are well written and fleshed out, the dialogue flows well, but the best thing about this book is what you don't know. You don't know if you can trust Cassel's memories or anyone else's motives, except Sam. You don't know Cassel's family history or really what being a Worker means.

Things you need to know:
#1. Ether you're a worker or you're not. Workers are not all bad, luck workers are used at weddings and baptisms...but then you have memory, emotion and death workers.
#2. Workers all experience "blowback" from the work they do, i.e. for each person a death worker kills, some part of them dies, hopefully it's only fingers.
#3. Working someone is illegal and Cassel's mom is in jail for it, she's an emotion worker and cons rich men out of their money. This is one of the reasons most workers are part of the mob, they can't legally use their skills.
#4. Everyone wears gloves. Curse workers have to touch you with their bare hands, so everyone is always gloved.
#5. Cassel is the good guy, well as good as anyone who loves to con people.

The book wraps up everything pretty well, but there is still so much back story that the reader doesn't know yet, as this is a series that isn't too surprising. I can't wait to read the rest, as for those that have read the Mortal Instruments series by Holly's friend Cassandra Clare, Jace is mentioned in the second book in this series, Red Glove.
Happy Reading,
Kelly

Review
I know your not suppose to judge a book by its cover but hello, how can you not love this cover! It is so beautiful. Now on to the review. I was blown away by this book. I grew up on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and this is a fresh new paranormal bag and tag.

I fell for Evie  from the start. As a girl who doesn’t know much about her past or were she came from, she does know she wants, a normal life. She is a teenager, and wants the clothes, school, and friends that go with that title. As the only Person in the world who can see through glamor, Evie has been working since she was eight years old. This is how she meets her love interest in the book, who just so happens to be a shapes shifter.

Paranormalcy for me was an amazing YA read. I am so excited that Supernaturally that’s coming out very soon. I can't wait to see what Evie has been up to since last we read her.

Waiting for snow......Waiting on Wednesday #1

I am a big fan of the Psy-Changeling series, and waiting for Kiss of Snow is killing me! But, I was so excited to see that today Nalini Singh had a new, small excerpt on her blog. Just enough to make your heart start beating  fast, and desperately want to know what happens next. This is Hawke and Sienna I’m talking about here how can we not want to know. the tension has been building for 9 books.

I am counting down the days until I can get my hands on Kiss of Snow. Until then I will admit to stalking Goodreads and reading reviews of those lucky enough to have gotten  an ARC, in the hopes getting a few spoilers…. shameless I know. I put the link to the Amazing Nalini Singh’s blog below, so that you can read the new excerpt. She also has the first chapter online.
                                                            Happy reading, Rebecca

Review: The Gathering (Darkness Rising #1) by Kelly Armstrong

The Gathering (Darkness Rising, #1)

Description

Sixteen-year-old Maya is just an ordinary teen in an ordinary town. Sure, she doesn't know much about her background - the only thing she really has to cling to is an odd paw-print birthmark on her hip - but she never really put much thought into who her parents were or how she ended up with her adopted parents in this tiny medical-research community on Vancouver Island.
Until now.
Strange things have been happening in this claustrophobic town - from the mountain lions that have been approaching Maya to her best friend's hidden talent for "feeling" out people and situations, to the sexy new bad boy who makes Maya feel . . . . different. Combine that with a few unexplained deaths and a mystery involving Maya's biological parents and it's easy to suspect that this town might have more than its share of skeletons in its closet.
In The Gathering, New York Times best-selling author Kelley Armstrong brings all the supernatural thrills from her wildly successful Darkest Powers series to Darkness Rising, her scorching hot new trilogy.

Review

As a big fan of The Darkest Powers Series, I was eager to see if Kelley Armstrong could pull off another great book series within that same world. After reading The Gathering, I know there was no need for concern. The characters were fresh, and the world building was amazing.

I really enjoyed reading Maya’s character. Some of my favorite scenes in the book are between she and her dad, they are so much fun. I loved the relationship between Maya and Daniel. There friendship is amazing. Last but not least, (any book I like must have romance in it) any and all interaction with Maya and Rafe. I loved this not so bad boy from the get go.

I will say that my only big complaint with The Gathering is that I have to wait so long for the next book in  the Darkness Rising series to come out.

Review

This was my first experience with a strictly ebook, but once i read the description of "True Blood meets Scrubs" I jumped on reading it, and I'm so glad I did. Dr.Aline Harman has her life together. She worked at a great hospital, and she gets to relieve her stress with a great doctor. That all comes crashing to an end when Rocque comes through the ER doors.

After ruining Aline's career in the human world, Rocque offers her a job at Grace General. Upon arriving at Grace General, Aline finds out she can't let anyone know she is human. That's not her only hurtle she also has to figure out a way to fight the pheromones that the vampires secrete naturally that make them even more irresistible, did I mention that most of the doctors are vampires.Intern With A Vampire is a fast and fun read, and I am excited about reading the next instalment in the series.

Happy Reading,
Rebecca

Review

If you have not read the other 8 books in the Psy-Changeling series, then don't start with Play of Passion go back and read them all. It is so worth it. This is a series that builds. The Psy-Changeling world is set a little in the future; and there are three main races: the psy, who have shunned all emotion and have many different, typed and levels of psychic/mind power. The changelings are incredibly strong being that change from human form to one set of animal form, and also have a natural mental shield. Then there are humans. Though humans are not portrayed as week in the series they are sort of up in the air between the two other species.

In Play of Passion we our back in the changeling world after two books away. Not only that but we are in the SnowDancers din. Indigo is a SnowDancer lieutenant. She is force to be dealt with, a calm that people can rely on, and always aware of everything that is gong on in her pack. Andrew Kincaid is the SowDancer tracker, and none knows just how dominate he really falls in the pack, or how long he has been waiting to track down Indigo.

Indigo has such a perfect mold of a real mate in her head that Drew just does not fit into that he almost doesn't get a chance with her. But Drew is a real charmer and makes Indigo see him for who he is. I truly loved that you got to see how the wolves played and interacted while in the mating dance. I loved that when she pushed him away all the women in the pack tried to help him. It made me smile. Then there love story starts tounfold. You find out why Indigo pushes anyone away who she thinks may be less dominant than her, and just how strong Drew really is.

There are a lot of cameos in this installment. The psy council has split and is out to get the SnowDancer alpha Hawke, but because of that there is this major meeting towards the end of the book with two councilors, the SnowDancers, Dark River, and Max the cop. I have to say i didn't see that coming together so soon. There is also some dialog between, and about Hawke and Sienne in this book. Their names make my heart go fast.

# 10 Kiss of Snow comes out May 31 2011. I can't wait ; )
Happy Reading,
Rebecca
