All That Audio

I don’t know about the rest of you but I really enjoy listening to audio books. I have actually gotten in the habit of listening to audio books while I’m doing mindless house work and when I go to the track instead of listening to music. I do however have a bit of a harder time reviewing audio books. I don’t know what my big struggle is with reviewing them, but I thought because it is difficult for me, today I would let you know about some more recent books I have listened to and give you my very short opinion of them.

Naked in Death (In Death, #1)

In hardcover for the first time, here is the novel that started it all-the first book in J. D. Robb's number-one New York Times-bestselling In Death series, featuring New York City homicide detective Lieutenant Eve Dallas and Roarke.

It is the year 2058, and technology now completely rules the world. But New York City Detective Eve Dallas knows that the irresistible impulses of the human heart are still ruled by just one thing-passion.

When a senator's daughter is killed, the secret life of prostitution she'd been leading is revealed. The high-profile case takes Lieutenant Eve Dallas into the rarefied circles of Washing-ton politics and society.

Further complicating matters is Eve's growing attraction to Roarke, who is one of the wealthiest and most influential men on the planet, devilishly handsome... and the leading suspect in the investigation.(Goodreads)

My thoughts

I have really fallen for this series. It is one of those series that people had told me I would like and I kept putting it off because there are so many books in the series. A lot of times in mystery books I know from very early on who did it, but in Naked in Death, and in its sequel I was questioning myself, which I loved.

I do think as the series continues that it probably will get a bit repetitive, but the relationship between Roarke and Eve has me not too worried about that at the moment. I want to see these two total opposites grow together in this new thing between them.

I also loved how gritty Naked in Death is. The author didn’t pull any punches when it came to the crimes in the story line, or to Eve’s past.

I will be listening to the third book in this series very soon.

Playing With Fire (Silver Dragons, #1)

My thoughts

I have been all about some dragon books lately. And you all know I love paranormal romance, so I thought this would be a perfect fit for me. Add the fact that my library has this entire series on audio, and the spinoff after…no brainer right!?! Well not so much:(

I thought the reader did do a good job at keeping the pace but her voice for the male lead really grated on me. I did like the leading lady, May. I enjoyed learning all the things May could do as a doppelganger and what her limitations were. I had never read a story with a doppelganger in it before. But the story line itself fell a bit flat for me. I don’t know if it was that there were so many different characters that I didn’t know where to put my attention, or if it was the fact that a lot of the characters I just didn’t care for.

I had really wanted to like this, but as of now I won’t be continuing this series.

What happens when an antisocial cinephile meets up with the worldly new guy at school — a quick-witted artist who's savvy enough to see through her sci-fi disguise?

Meet Egg. Her real name is Victoria Jurgen, but she's renamed herself after the kick-ass heroine of her favorite sci-fi movie, Terminal Earth. Like her namesake, Egg dresses all in white, colors her eyebrows, and shaves her head. She always knows the right answers, she's always in control, and she's far too busy — taking photos for the school paper, meeting with the Science Fiction and Fantasy Club, and hanging out at the creature shop with her dad, the special-effects makeup wizard — to be bothered with friends, much less members of the opposite sex. As far as Egg is concerned, she's boy proof, and she likes it that way. But then Egg meets a boy named Max, a boy who's smart and funny and creative and cool...and happens to like Egg. Could this be the end of the world — at least as Egg knows it?(Goodreads)

My thoughts

I have recently gotten into contemporary books and I really enjoyed Boy Proof. Victoria has not just boy proofed herself she doesn’t let anyone in, that way no one can hurt her. I thought Victoria was a bit whiney at the beginning but as the story progressed I found myself really liking her character. Victoria makes a LOT of mistakes but she grows from them.

This book took me back to that idealistic mindset of my teenage years when I was on the verge of everything and ready to change all the wrongs in the world. At the same time Boy Proof is also very funny, and I loved the way Cecil Castellucci dealt with different relationships.

If you like YA or contemporary give this a go. I thought it was great! I am actually going to go out and buy my youngest sister a copy very soon.

Happy reading…err listening,

  1. Oh weird. As a girl I'd never shave my head! Anywho, I like your little reviews. I struggle with audio books. Mainly because they just take longer to listen to than "normal" reading.
