The princess of the school, Alice, is keeping a secret that could strip her of her high school fame. She is obsessed with the school’s outcast, Keith, but not just him – his music.

Since the inspiration for the song hit, Keith can’t get it out of his mind. The song must be played; it demands to be played. He knows the music is changing him, but he is unable to stop it.

Music has the ability to move you, enlighten you, and take you to places you have never dreamed of. And this particular piece? It has a life of its own and makes you forget who you really are.

As Keith and Alice learn of one another to the notes of that one perfect tune, they can overlook their roles and discover who they could be together. But they also discover someone else is listening and intends on keeping Keith to herself, possibly for an eternity.(Goodreads)

Review

Silent Song is one of those books that you sit down to read and because you are thrown into the story so quickly before you know it you have finished the book. I love it when that happens!

Alice is part of the popular crowd and at times is mean without even realizing it. Alice has that teenage ability to believe that what happens to her matters more than anything in the world so no one else's feelings really matter. But, there is one person she thinks a lot about that should not even be on her radar.

I had been wishing for years, ever since I started taking this detour and stopping in front of his house. From the very beginning, I wished I could know him as I believed I did.

I liked Alice. She thinks she has been so slick and secretive when she goes stalking around the school's token freak's house to listen to him play music. Alice knows if she is discovered it would be social suicide. Even though Alice is very much your typical popular girl I enjoyed seeing growth in her as the story progressed.

Keith is ostracized be the student body of his school. As a total outcast he is used to being ignored and in a lot of ways likes it that way. Keith is thrown into the spotlight when the director of the school play finds out he can play his guitar so well that the play could have its own soundtrack. I loved Keith. He never tries to be anyone but his socially awkward self. Keith knows Alice comes by his house to listen to him play but he doesn’t hold it over her. He is that nice guy that so many people don’t give the time of day to. And let me just add that for once in a YA the lead guy is not this perfect looking teenager that everyone is secretly crushing on!

The thing I loved about Silent Song…

OK, so you know by reading the description that Alice and Keith will end up getting together, but the fact that these two fell for each other quick did not bother me. Want to know why??? It wasn’t insta-love! Keith and Alice have a history. They had known each other when they where kids, for me that really added to the story, especially after learning the reason their families stopped being friends.

It was crazy, and I didn’t want to dwell on it. I gave him my number and a shiver ran down my spine when he smiled wickedly and said “Gotcha” in that deep voice of his.

He noticed and stood up, holding out a hand to help me. “It’s getting cold. Sorry, I shouldn’t have kept you out this late.”

I took his hand and said nothing about how warm I was actually feeling.

I loved the romance between Keith and Alice. It was…well it was so sweet. I mean that in a good way. When I would read the dialog between them I would end up smiling every time.

Something that was great…

The following day, Keith cut class. It sucked, because I had been hoping to have lunch with him and because I hated how much I’d grown to anticipate his presence, but the day was pretty smooth anyway. The lessons were as fascinating as ever, and the drama at the cafeteria would have made any teenager movie proud. Lena snickered and glared, and her group stared down my group. Pretty cliché, really.

We all know that there are going to be some of the same things that will happen when it comes to books set in high school. I love the fact that Ron pointed it out. She even has Keith call Alice out on her stalking, which they then joke about. I loved that!

This took me by surprise…

By the time I was about 2/3 of the way through with Silent Song I couldn’t decide if there was something paranormal going on or if Keith was having some sort of a mental breakdown. It was really up in the air for a while… No! I’m not going to tell you which it was;) You will just have to read and find out like I did. I will say that during that time of wondering what was up I did not understand why Keith’s dad didn’t take him to the doctor, I know it helped add to the suspense of the story, but I would have drug my kid to the doctor to figure out what was up.

I really enjoyed the fact that Alice and Keith had parents that were visibly in their lives. I especially liked Keith’s dad he was so sweet.

Silent Song is is a super quick read that I recommend to anyone who enjoys YA. I am excited to see what Ron C. Nieto comes out with next.

Happy reading,

About the Author

Ron C. Nieto

Ron C. Nieto was born not that long ago in a bustling European city. Well, okay, she was born in Madrid, Spain. Though there were no castles and definitely no princes whatsoever, and she can’t recall any fairy looming over her cradle, she was awarded a gift of sorts: a wild imagination combined with a love for words. Unfortunately, along came the curse of the Procrastination Monster, who has shadowed her for the best part of her life to date.

But in spite of this, she knew she wanted to be a writer from the very beginning: actually, she does not recall ever striving to be anything else.

Well, past that amusing stage wherein she insisted on being Batman, that is.

Anyway, she undertook her educational adventure and eventually graduated from Universidad Pontificia Comillas ICADE ICAI, where she became a translator for Spanish, English, French, Italian and Japanese. Her stay in the Realms of Higher Education gave her the strength to overcome the Procrastination Monster, sit down and scratch the aspiring out of aspiring writer.

Silent Song is her debut novel and she already has plans for her next projects. She can be found working on them whenever she doesn’t procrastinate doing something else.

  3. Hey Rebecca!

Thank you so much for hosting me today! And thanks for writing that super awesome review... It's one of my faves so far! :) Plus, I'm super happy you picked up on those things you comment, like involved family relations, comments about clichés and not insta-love.

(And... I would take my kid to the doc too. Perhaps we will find out why Keith's father doesn't though... Perhaps! *grins evilly*)
