Review: Her Dear & Loving Husband (Loving Husband, #1) by Meredith Allard

Her Dear and Loving Husband (Loving Husband, #1)

Description

How long would you wait for the one you loved?

Her Dear & Loving Husband, the new novel from Meredith Allard, is part literary fiction, part historical fiction, part romance, and part paranormal fantasy. With elements of Twilight and The Crucible, Her Dear & Loving Husband is a story for anyone who believes that true love never dies.

James Wentworth has a secret. He lives quietly in Salem, Massachusetts, making few ties anywhere. One night his private world is turned upside down when he meets Sarah Alexander, a dead ringer for his wife, Elizabeth. Though it has been years since Elizabeth's death, James cannot move on.

Sarah also has a secret. She is haunted by nightmares about the Salem Witch Trials, and every night she is awakened by visions of hangings, being arrested, and dying in jail. Despite the obstacles of their secrets, James and Sarah fall in love. As James comes to terms with his feelings for Sarah, he must dodge accusations from a reporter desperate to prove that James is not who, or what, he seems to be. With the help of their friends, witches Jennifer and Olivia, James and Sarah piece their stories together and discover a mystery that may bind them in ways they never imagined. Will James make the ultimate sacrifice to protect Sarah and prevent a new hunt from bringing hysteria to Salem again?

Review

I can see how a lot of people will see that Her Dear and Loving Husband is a paranormal romance about a vampire and say “oh here we go again”. Let me set you straight this is not your cookie cutter vampire romance. As someone who reads paranormal romance often, I found Her Dear and Loving Husband refreshing.

I loved the two main characters James and Sarah. James is the type of character you read about, then wonder “If I lived back then and that happened to my husband and I, would he do for me what James did for Lizzy/Sarah?” I couldn’t help but fall for James—he is an amazing male lead. You know what I’m talking about that man that would do anything for the woman he loves. The woman he loves is Sarah. Shock of all shocks Sarah is written as a real women. I really felt like Allard got Sarah right, when the paranormal stuff was put in front of her, Sarah acted scared, you know like an actual person would. It took Sarah time to adjust to the paranormal aspects of life.  Allard’s pacing of this love story is so well done, especially in the case of James and Sarah. So often writers rush the romance between two characters and it seems more like just lust and sex. That is never the case in Her Dear and Loving Husband; you feel you are reading a true love story till the end.

I so enjoyed this love story and I was amazed at the depth Allard went to to tell it. The history of the Salem Witch Trials that is imbedded in Her Dear and Loving Husband is incredible. It is apparent that Meredith Allard shows great attention to getting her facts straight when researching for her novel. I felt for the people of that time: having to live or die through false judgment because of others’ hate and stupidity. Allard does such a good job of bringing to light the fact that we may not have come quite as far as we think we have as people as a whole.

Even though this is a series, it doesn't end as some horrible cliffhanger, it has a nice ending. That doesn’t mean I’m not super excited for the next in the series though, because I am. I could go on and on about more but I would start to spoil things. GO READ THE BOOK!!!

Happy Reading,
